Richard - the Independent Councillor for Barry Court Ward

Richard is the Independent Councillor for Barry Court Ward.

Richard was most recently elected in 2017, and sits on Barry Town Council and sits on Social Care & Health and Democratic Services Scrutiny – he lists social services, housing and transport as his interests – He is also a member of the Independent group on the Vale of Glamorgan Council. He is also the Chair of the Witchell Community Centre, a governor at Jenner Park Primary school, and Ysgol-Y-Deri – special school in Penarth.

He was first elected as the Member for the Court Ward in May 1999, and served first as a Labour Member subsequently quitting over bullying , the Iraq War and all-women’s short lists, and then as Independent member, where he is listed as an Independent Socialist.

Richard lives in Barry, and was born and brought up in Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan. He went to St. Richard Gwyn RC High School, followed by studies in engineering at Barry College.

Richard has worked for many years in the traffic department at Cardiff Bus, as well as being actively involved with Unite the trade union.

Richard lists his hobbies as reading, walking and outdoor pursuits. He also volunteers with many groups in the community.

As an Independent group member – Richard played his part in being an effective opposition member, pushing to help make healthcare and education, the priorities for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and tackling challenges such as poverty.

Richard is very active within the local community – dealing directly with the concerns of local people in Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan, and works closely with other Independents in the area.

He is a proud member of the Focus Barry focus group.
